I have no particular reason for photographing cats and tomatoes together – I like cats and I like tomatoes, and they both have interesting colors and textures.
Tomatoes are a New World plant, probably originating in the highlands of western South America. When early explorers brought them back to Europe, many people refused to eat them because they are in the Solanales Order, or "Nightshade" family, and thought that they were poisonous.
Most people know that domestic cats were common in ancient Egypt, and that they were held in high regard. Bastet was the patron Goddess of domestic cats. The earliest evidence for cat domestication, though, comes from the island of Cypress, where a human burial, dating to about 9,500 years ago, also contained the remains of a cat. Or, if you like, a cat burial also contained the remains of a human. (You can read more about the burials here.)
I'll add more pictures and write more here later.
